      Historical notes

The Acquarium was realized in 1933 adapting the facilities that are next to the central Fish Market (Salone degli Incanti – Enchantements’ Hall), precisely where the clock tower is located.

Twenty-five tanks were built to contain from 200 to 2,500 lt and one central tank of 17,000 lt of water. Water is drawn directly from the sea at the basis of the pier close to the central Fish Market and, through a potent pumping system, is directed into the clock tower to fill a big tank at 10 mt of height where the water breathes for a period – after which it is distributed again, by fall, to the fish tanks in the Acquarium on the ground floor. This represents an open water-circuit that, without a specific filtering system, it provides an ongoing flow of fresh seawater highly rich in plankton.
