Historical notes
Our Lanterna Deluxe-Suite is named after the historic lighthouse known as the Lanterna, which once guided ships to the city’s port and still marks the entrance to the Old Harbour, atop the Molo Fratelli Bandiera. Construction of the lighthouse began in 1831, lead by the famous architect Matteo Pertsch. It is quite imposing and powerful, built on a solid wooden beam foundation, and integrated into the Zucco rock. The lighthouse became operational on 12th February 1833 and quickly became a city landmark. It was decommissioned in 1969 and passed into the care of the Lega Navale, which maintained the structure and made it their headquarters. A restoration was carried out in 1992, and since then, a symbolic light is lit in the Lanterna every evening, pointing towards the city. It is also interesting to note that, in 1890, a small bathing establishment called Bagno Comunale Lanterna was built close to the lighthouse. It still exists today and is known by the locals of Trieste as Pedocin. It is the last bathing establishment in Europe where the male and female areas are separated by a wall. This feature is passionately defended by many lovers of old Trieste.
